For the past 5 years, Baca educator Abel Montelongo has coordinated the voluntary summer offering at Eva Baca. “Mr. M,” as the Roadrunners refer to him, set up the program to resemble a “summer camp” that offers scholars visits to attractions and exhibits that correspond to the hands-on instruction he offers in the classroom.
After four years of productive service to Heroes K-8 Academy, Mrs. Griego was called upon to lead Eva R. Baca Elementary School and its Roadrunners as Principal. “It’s hard to believe I will be closing out my fifth year at Baca: time flies when you are having fun,” Principal Griego said. “I absolutely love being the leader of this great school and consider it a privilege and honor.”
Across the district, Read Across America Week, which annually coincides with the birthday of Theodor “Dr. Suess” Geisel, saw D60 students revel in the wealth of activities and specially themed days designed to add a fun component to the pro-literacy campaign. As is tradition, a number of district and community notables, from Superintendent Charlotte Macaluso to Sheriff Kirk Taylor to Mayor Nick Gradisar, donned the famous “Cat in the Hat” headware and read their favorite Dr. Seuss book.
In addition to preparing children for Kindergarten, and easing that adjustment, preschool can help children advance academically and develop social-emotional skills, such as sharing and being respectful, showing empathy, and dealing with emotions.
